It seems to be the answer we were wanting. The warrior to battle the ailment which kills more people than any other, may well be inside us. Scientists now say that results from experiments show we have a gene within us which can beat cancer in some instances and this is finally welcome news because, despite earlier scientific results which showed a treatment against cancer, this seems to be it.

It is not the answer we need to defeat all cancer types, but it is a hugely important advancement in our knowledge of how the disease affects and destroys the human body, and, in future, will help scientists discover how to manipulate this particular gene to combat other cancers.

A gene may curb its carrier against a number of cancers, as shown in new tests.

Two variants of the B-MYB gene found in almost 50% of the global population are less prominent in people with cancer, as reported in the Nature journal.

The Institute of Child Health's Dr Arturo Sala claimed it might reveal itself as a "key player" in cancer.

A charity named Cancer Research UK said that further tests might explain how it might help stop the disease.

Other research had already shown B-MYB having a role in the development of the cancer.

It has been found to be over-active in numerous types of cancer.

The latest tests looked at more than 400 people with either colon cancer, a brain tumour known as neuroblastoma, clinically called chronic myeloid leukaemia.

Their version of the B-MYB gene was researched and tested against the types discovered in 230 "controls" - volunteers with no known cancer.
